It was a very beautiful day in New York city, Sept 20th 2010 when the first ever Women Inspire and Enterprise Symposium kicked of in the early hours of the morning. Miss Fifi Soumah, the reigning Miss Africa USA 2010, a special guest invited by White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood was in attendance among many successful and aspiring women of all ages. The WIE conference, was hosted by the White Ribbon Alliance For Safe Motherhood of which former First Lady of Britain Sarah Brown serves as the Global chair and Urban Zen Foundation.

The conference was moderated by world renowned Fashion Designer Donna Karan, First Lady Sarah Brown and Media Personality Ariana Huffington.

The WIE Symposium (Women: Inspiration & Enterprise) that took place in New York City was timed to coincide with the Clinton Global Initiative and the UN General Assembly this year. The event included high profile speakers and guests drawn from the worlds of politics, philanthropy, media, fashion and the arts – as well as members of the next generation of leaders. Speakers participated on different Panel discussions ranging from business, health, beauty, humanitarian work and even spirituality. It was very empowering. Some of the Speakers included:

Acclaimed Actress Ashley Judd, Maria Eitel, Founding President of Nike Foundation, Ambassador Melanie Verveer, Baroness Amos, Aerin Lauder, Senior Vice President of Estee Lauder, Sheila C Johnson, Founding Partner of BET and many other very successful and dynamic women. Melinda Gates, Co-Chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, delivered the Key note address for the conference.

The WIE Symposium was held to coincide with a United Nations review summit on the Millennium Development Goals also held in New York. The Symposium provided an incredible opportunity to introduce powerful women to the work of the White Ribbon Alliance and the challenges of maternal health. The conference was certainly very inspiring as we listened to the speakers talking about the challenges in their lives as successful women, great motivational speeches and concerns for maternal health world wide.

Key note Speaker, humanitarian Melinda Gates, Co-Chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation shares her experiences as she traveled the world to witness first hand, the impact of poverty and the devastating effects it has had on women and children and also see the work that their foundation is doing on the ground to make a difference in the world of poverty. It was really an honor to sit and listen to such a woman of great achievements and more so a humanitarian who works tirelessly to give millions of deprived families a chance to live and a chance to survive.

Sarah Brown, former First Lady of Britain who is also the Chair of The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood addresses the attendees at the Women Inspiration and Enterprise conference where over 500 professional and business women gathered for a day of empowerment and motivation. The White Ribbon Alliance is working very hard around the world to raise awareness on the need to ensure safe pregnancy and childbirth. WRA shared some harrowing stories that some mothers have gone through and some were not lucky to make it because of lack of provisions for safe child birth. This issue is also part of the United Nations Millenium Goals.

Speakers included:

Miss Africa USA 2010 Fatoumata (Fifi) Soumah and Lady Kate Njeuma, CEO of Miss Africa USA Scholarship Pageant at the Women Inspiration and Enterprise Conference in New York City.

Miss Africa USA Fifi Soumah spends a moment with Nthabiseng Tshabalala, a 12 yrs old South African girl who also one of the panelists of the conference. She is HIV positive and lost her mother to the disease when she was only 7. She is a beacon of hope for the 69 million children of the world who may never see a class room if education of the child is not prioritized. She addressed addressed President Zuma and other Heads of States during the World Cup Education Summit and was in New York for the United Nations Summit, calling for education for all children. She stunned the audience when she announced her ambition is to become a pilot in future…..well she got a standing ovation. To me she was the star of this conference, the hope of a new generation.

Miss Africa USA Fifi Soumah had the opportunity to sign the Art Board of White Ribbon Alliance, among other dynamic women attending the conference.

The message was simple, women have to support one another and together we can all elevate the status of women across the world. After all the speaking engagements, the night ended with a breath taking Fashion show organized by the world famous fashion designer Donna Karan as pictured above.

The Parade of Nations has been very much a part of the Miss Africa USA Pageant since 2006. Each year the designers take it to the next level and the next level. This year, a very special African fashion designer who loved the concept offered to give it a go and of course it was another mind blowing experience. Stella Atal who flew in from Kampala after weeks of threading together beautiful designs with the colors of each participating nation in the pageant took over this show and brought out the best in each finalist on stage. Pictured above is Queen Fifi Soumah Miss Africa USA 2010 on the Runway wearing Stella Atal’s design for Guinea during Parade of nations segment of the competition.

Pictured above, Stella Atal, the award winning African Designer from Uganda poses with pageant delegates at the finals of Miss Africa USA Pageant 2010. Left to Right, countries represented above: Liberia, Namibia, Cameroon, Guinea, Botswana, Uganda, Zambia, Ghana, Kenya and Rwanda, all dazzling in Stella Atal’s Parade of Nations Collection.

Pictured above Miss Rwanda delegate Kadija Uwimana takes a stride on the Runway, modeling Stella Atal’s Colors for Rwanda, beautifully put together and well accessorized, hair Afrocentric, shoes off the chain and the best smile, showcasing the beauty of Rwanda, a nation with a trouble past marked with genocide and civil war but now ranking as one of the fastest developing countries in Africa. Up Rwanda!!!!!!!!!!!

Another feature of Stella Atal’s designs on the Runway modeled by Miss Ghana Agnes Ntow. This little dress is beautifully put together, looks very sexy and elegant. What makes it even more appealing is the way it is modeled by Miss Ntow with lots of confidence, beautiful braids, accessories, best heels and of course the smile.

Miss Liberia finalist Tracey Weah pictured above models Stella Atal’s design for Liberia. A simple top with the colors of Liberia matched with plain Leggings, you can’t go wrong with this combination. Miss Tracey keeps it simple with beautiful accessories a contagious smile and great pose for Liberia, the nation which boasts of having the first and only female President in Africa.

Queen Fifi Soumah during Fashion competition

African Fashion, as beautiful and vibrant as it is, never gets the kind of exposure and media highlight that it deserves. Well the Miss Africa USA Pageant has embraced African Fashion and is committed to showcasing African Couture, working with Afro-centric designers to bring out the best of African Fashion on the pageant runway. Each year a number of well renowned African designers are invited to showcase their fashion lines on the pageant runway and the 2010 competition saw the best yet to grace the pageant. Award winning designers such as Frank Osodi from Nigeria, Stella Atal from Uganda, Vera Ochia from Kenya and Akouavi Slater from Togo were all in the House, ready to take control.

African Fashion entails more than just the dress you wear, it has a lot to do with the accessories and so much more. Pictured above is Miss Twamma Nambili representing Namibia. You’ve got to love her hair piece, the Porcupine head dress, very spiky and elegant. A beautiful smile is certainly a necessary complement for this headpiece, making it even more beautiful. Kudos to Miss Twamma for carrying this whole ensemble with such elegance and grace.

I don’t know about you but this dress being modeled by Miss Nessie Abdulai representing Sierra Leone makes me go WOW, it is beautifully put together and well accessorized, combined with Miss Nessie’s charming smile, you’ve got to love it. I certainly wouldn’t mind having this dress in my wardrobe for that special occasion.

Who says only renowned designers can design African Fashion? Well, Meet Miss Hilda Mauya representing Kenya on the runway. This African Queen had a go at designing her own outfits for the pageant and of course, her pageant dresses were breath taking indeed. She discovered her passion in designing unique styles and she is on the run with it. Miss Hilda’s style won her the Miss Africa USA Super Model with Style Award. She is one designer we should all be looking out for.

When you think of African Fashion, Kente clothe will immediately come to mind for most people. Yes the Kente is always present on the Miss Africa USA Runway, thanks to the delegates from Ghana who always go that extra length to bring out the Best of Kente. Pictured above is Miss Agnes Ntow representing Ghana, showcasing Kente Fashion on the Miss Africa USA Runway. Miss Agnes won the Fashion Award 2010.

An African outfit designed by Akouavi Slater is modeled by Miss Roseline Amusu who represented Nigeria in the pageant.

Pictured above : Miss Africa USA management team members pose with Fashion designers who graced the pageant this year. L_R: Miss Linda Arrey Pageant Manager, Vera Ochia, Frank Osodi, Lady Kate Njeuma Pageant Founder and CEO, Stella Atal, Akouavi Slater and Kyle Haggerty Pageant Production Manager.

Miss Africa USA Pageant will continue to promote African Fashion the best we can in collaboration with African Designers. We Africans and Friends of Africa should do our best to patronize African Fashion and showcase on the global stage.

The Miss Africa USA Pageant management proudly welcomes to the stage Miss Chinwe Enu, who plans to thrill attendees with her beautiful and angelic voice and talent. Chinwe Enu will perform the African Anthem at the kick off of the Miss Africa USA Pageant.

Young soprano Chinwe Enu continues to garner acclaim for her beautiful voice and captivating stage presence. She was recently hailed by the Washington City Paper for her “soaring operatic voice.” In June 2007 she made her African debut in a recital of arias and art song with the MUSON Center Orchestra at the MUSON Center in Lagos, Nigeria. Following the concert, she was praised by Nigerian press for her “almost flawless sound” and “superior talent.” In 2006, she appeared as Saffi in Strauss’s Der Zigeunerbaron in concert in Graz, Austria with the American Institute of Musical Studies Festival Orchestra where she was praised for her “glorious sound.” In 2008, Ms. Enu was commended for being an inspiration to young African women and was awarded the African Jewel Award. Her 2009 engagements included a July concert of Faure’s La Bonne Chanson, with chamber orchestra, at the InterHarmony Music Festival in San Francisco, California, and a November recital of arias and art song in Maryland.
